Introduction/End of Fall Semester Recap

Hello everyone! Welcome to the new edition of HPU student blogs. Myself along with a few other students will be writing and updating on here. My biography is on the right side of the page so you can check that out as well. But for a brief introduction, my name is Jesand. I’m a sophomore here at HPU studying Marketing. I’m a Honolulu local, born and raised. I work as an intern in the Marketing office here at HPU, a part- time sales associate, and as a soldier in the Hawaii Army National Guard. I’m very busy to say the least. I hope you are able to find my blog useful and easy to follow.

Anyways, I have been at HPU for about two years now. I chose HPU because the military services offered to veterans were very appealing and all of the faculty who helped me through in- processing we’re very helpful. You can tell that all HPU faculty members are dedicated to their work and will do anything to help students succeed. This past semester was a little bit more difficult than I expected than my freshman year, but it comes with the territory. Nonetheless, having two jobs and serving part- time in the military along with balancing school, does get challenging but it is definitely do- able. My professors were all very helpful and eager to help their students whether is be providing a lot of supplemental material through blackboard (our online classroom), being available during their office hours, or meeting out on Fort Street to review class lectures. I am glad that another semester is over and I’m about half way towards my degree.

One particular challenge I had was choosing my classes for next spring semester. My advisor was really helpful and knowledgeable with my program requirements and even set up a degree plan for me back when I was a freshman. Now, every semester, I am able to check in with the advisors and ask questions or to see if I’m on track. Now that I am going in to my upper division classes, I still have a few open electives. HPU has so many different classes that it was difficult to choose one from the amount of choices available to me. After thinking about what I really want to do with my degree and my own personal interests, I chose English 2201 “Literary Utopias and Dystopias.” I took an honors writing course as a freshman because I love writing hip- hop music and wanted to expand my avenues of creativity beyond rhythm and poetry. So, now that I have a little bit more space to take extra elective classes, I chose English 2201 because I think it would be interesting to study different stories of utopias and dystopias and apply them to what’s happening in society now. With all the progression and corruption in this world, I think that studying that subject would provide me with exceptional insight.

I hope that my first blog was helpful in getting a peak in to the student life here at HPU. I will be checking in about once a week. Thanks! Have a good week and happy holidays!
